Entertaining should be a very simple matter and, no doubt, in early times, it was. But at present we have evolved a system of habits and customs regulating our acts which all members of a society generally observe. At present the matter of entertaining is based on three things: a feeling of friendliness, a conception of hospitality, and the tradition of honoring guests.
The feeling of friendliness demands that the front door is left open when you are expecting guests. When the visitors come, greet them warmly and sit down with them. Engage them in conversation. Introduce them to each other.
The conception of hospitality demand that when you invite your friends to come to your house, you intend to give them something to eat. This takes us to the conventions of the dining table. When the hostess calls the guests to eat, go with them, stand behind your chair, and sit down when everyone sit down. So these are the few ways in entertaining guests.
